Protein Buddy arrives on Android
For immediate release
Protein Buddy is now available on Google Play. The first Android release, version 1.2.0, brings the whole logging loop to Android: photo scan, voice, barcode and manual entry, a personal daily protein target, two-way Health Connect sync, home screen widgets and an ongoing progress notification. It runs on Android 8.0 or later and is free to install.

At a glance
- Protein Buddy 1.2.0 is live on Google Play, the first Android release of the app.
- Four ways to log: photo scan of a meal, voice in plain language, barcode, and manual grams or a typed description.
- Two-way Health Connect sync, home screen widgets, and an opt-in ongoing progress notification.
- Available in 10 languages, free to install, and it works offline with no account required.
- Protein Scout, which launched on iOS on 1 August 2026, is not part of this first Android build.
Protein Buddy, the protein-only tracker for people who want to hit one number a day rather than count everything, is now available on Google Play. Version 1.2.0 is the first Android release of the app, which has been on the App Store since July 2026.
One number a day
Most food trackers ask you to log everything you eat and give you a page of numbers back. Protein Buddy asks for one: the grams of protein you have eaten today. A short quiz sets a personal daily target from sex, age, body weight, activity, goal and whether you take a GLP-1 medication, and the target can be edited at any time.
That focus is the product. It is built for people protecting muscle while losing weight or ageing, including people taking GLP-1 medication, rather than for competitive athletes. Our reference article on protein and muscle loss on GLP-1 medications sets out the research behind that.
What is in the first Android release
- Photo scan. Photograph a meal and get its protein back in seconds, with no database to search.
- Voice. Say what you ate in plain language and it is logged.
- Barcode. Instant protein for packaged food, free and unlimited.
- Manual entry. Type a description and let the app estimate the grams, or drag the gram ruler. Free and unlimited.
- Health Connect, both ways. Protein you log here is written to Health Connect, and dietary protein logged by other apps is imported and counts toward your day. Body weight can be read to keep the target current.
- Widgets and an ongoing notification. Home screen widgets show progress and open straight into a logging method. The lock screen progress notification is opt in.
- History you can correct. Add, edit or delete an entry on any day, including past days, and move an entry to a different day. Streaks recalculate, so a forgotten dinner does not unfairly break one.
- Offline and account optional. Photo and voice logs are saved on the spot and analysed when connectivity returns. Signing in with Google is optional and adds backup and sync across devices.
- 10 languages. English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian.
What is not in it
Protein Scout, which launched on iOS in version 1.3 on 1 August 2026, is not part of Android 1.2.0. Android is currently one version behind iOS, and features are announced here when they ship, not before.
Availability
Protein Buddy 1.2.0 is free to install from Google Play and requires Android 8.0 or later. Barcode and manual logging, including the typed AI estimate, are free and unlimited. Photo scan and voice logging come with a one-time free allowance per install, after which continued AI analysis is a subscription. Current prices are shown on the Google Play listing.
About Protein Buddy
Protein Buddy is a protein-only tracker for iPhone, iPad and Android. It asks for one number a day, the grams of protein you have eaten, sets a personal daily target from a short quiz, and makes each log take seconds by photo, voice, barcode or typing. It does not count calories.
The app is built for people protecting muscle while losing weight or ageing, including people taking GLP-1 medication, rather than for competitive athletes. Logging works offline, an account is optional, and the log lives on the device. Protein Buddy is made by Melloway, Inc.
