"Eat more protein" is the most repeated piece of weight loss advice there is, and it is usually given without saying what it actually buys you. The honest version is narrower than the promise and more useful than it sounds.

Why that matters more than the scale

A kilogram is a kilogram to a bathroom scale, and it is not the same kilogram to your body. Muscle is what carries you up stairs, and it is metabolically active tissue, so losing it makes the weight easier to regain and the next deficit harder.

This is why "how much did you lose" is a worse question than "what did you lose". Two people can lose the same 6 kg and end up in different places, and protein is one of the few levers that moves which of those two you are. The long term studies are messier than the short ones. Trials running months rather than weeks produced limited and conflicting results, and the review attributes that mainly to one thing: whether people kept to the diet they were given.2
