Protein Buddy is the best protein scanner app

Protein Buddy is the best protein scanner app you can put on your phone. One camera does three jobs: it snaps a meal and fills in the grams of protein, it scans barcodes free with no limit, and with Protein Scout it reads a menu and ranks the high-protein dishes. Every scan answers in grams of protein, the one number on your Home screen.

Protein Buddy is the app we make.

Why Protein Buddy wins

  1. Three scanners in one camera. Meal, Barcode and Scout sit side by side at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Barcode scanning is free, with no limit. Protein Pal puts it in Pro and MyFitnessPal in Premium.14
  3. Snap, tap, logged. The grams fill in, one tap sets your portion, and the meal is in your day.
  4. Protein Scout reads the menu for you. Point it at a menu or a buffet and the high-protein dishes come back ranked.
  5. The scan you use most is free for good. Barcode, manual entry, typed meals and Siri never expire, and meal photos, voice and Protein Scout come with 3 free tries each.
  6. No account to start, and your protein syncs both ways with Apple Health and Health Connect.

Protein Pal's FAQ puts barcode scanning, AI photo scanning and the home screen widget in its Pro upgrade, and its site lists Apple Health sync for Pro users on iOS.1 Its App Store listing puts barcode scanning and food database search in the pro version too.2 Cronometer keeps Photo Log and Voice Log, including Siri, for Gold.3 MyFitnessPal lists Barcode Scan, Meal Scan and Voice Log as Premium tools.4 MacroFactor is a premium app that starts with a 7-day trial.5 Cal AI, which comes up in this search too, is a calorie counter whose App Store listing says scan results require a subscription;6 the Cal AI alternative for protein goes head to head.

Three scans, one camera

Tap the gold camera button on Home. The row at the bottom switches between Meal, Barcode and Scout, and the screen title changes with it.

Snap a meal

Stay on Meal and snap the plate from above. A served plate or bowl, a drink, a protein bar or a bottled shake, on the table or in your hand: the dish name and its grams of protein fill in. A tub of protein powder or its Supplement Facts panel works too, and it logs one serving. The Gallery button in the bottom corner scans a photo you already took.

  1. Snap the plateTap the gold camera button on Home, stay on Meal and press the shutter.
  2. See the gramsThe dish name and its grams of protein fill in on the card.
  3. Set your portionUnder How much did you eat? tap ½, ¾, All or ×1½.
  4. Log itTap Log 30g, or whatever your number is. It goes toward today's target, and to Apple Health or Health Connect when sync is on.
From shutter to logged. A bowl that reads 40 g, of which you ate three quarters, logs as 30 g.

If you keep an eye on calories or macros as well, the card shows them under the protein grams, and they follow the portion you choose. To picture portions at a glance, what 30 grams of protein looks like shows common foods at that amount.

Scan a barcode

Switch to Barcode, or open it from the ••• menu on Home. There is no shutter: hold the code in the wide frame and it reads on its own, EAN and UPC alike. The product, the brand and a How much? control in servings or packs appear, and you can tap the number to set the grams of protein when you ate part of a pack. For how serving sizes on a pack work, see how protein is listed on a food label.

Scan as many packs as you like: barcode never counts against anything.

Scout a menu

Protein Scout is for the moment before you order: a restaurant menu, a menu board, a hotel breakfast buffet, a café counter. Pick Scout in the camera, or open it from the ••• menu, and aim at the menu, where the frame reads Point at the menu or food display.

The answer arrives as Your best choices: the high-protein dishes ranked in order, each with its protein range, and a Best fit badge on your photo with the top pick's range. A card might read grilled chicken bowl, 34 to 42 g. Order it, and when it arrives, snap it with Meal and it goes into your day. Scout again reads the next page of the menu.

Start scanning with Protein Buddy

Download Protein Buddy and scan the next packet you open: the barcode scanner is free for good. For every other way to log, voice and typing included, see how to log protein by photo, voice or barcode. For scanning protein, Protein Buddy is the app to get.
