Protein Buddy is the best protein tracker for Android
Protein Buddy is the best app for tracking protein on Android. It is built around one number, your daily protein, and it brings that number to the places Android does best: Health Connect, a resizable home screen widget, a Lock Screen progress notification and a dark mode that follows your phone. That is Protein Buddy, the app we make.
Protein-first tracking. Calories, macros and fiber are optional. Protein is the only number on Home unless you add more in Settings, under Keep an eye on, where each extra nutrient gets its own goal.
Why Protein Buddy wins on Android
- Health Connect runs both ways, free. Your logs land in Health Connect, and protein from other apps counts toward today.
- You log from the Home Screen. The widget carries up to three buttons you choose, and Lock Screen progress keeps Manual, Voice and Photo one tap away.
- Scan the barcode, free, as often as you like. Or type "two eggs and toast" and the grams fill in, also free.
- Light or dark, your call. Automatic follows your phone, or pick Light or Dark.
- Set up in a minute, no account. A short quiz, GLP-1 use included, sets your daily protein target, and you are logging.
- Buy it once if subscriptions are not your thing. A lifetime purchase is on the same screen as the plans.

Cronometer is the app for every vitamin and mineral; Protein Buddy is the app for one number, hit daily. Switching from one of them is covered in the Cronometer alternative for protein, the MyFitnessPal alternative and switching from MacroFactor to a protein tracker.
Health Connect, both directions
Turn it on in Settings, Health Connect, Sync with Health Connect, and allow nutrition read and write. Setup offers the same switch.
- Where Health Connect lives. On Android 14 and later it is built in, under Settings; on Android 13 and earlier it is an app from the Play Store.1 Protein Buddy walks you through either one.
- Written to Health Connect: the protein from every log, filed as nutrition in Health Connect. A log with nutrition details (photo, voice, a typed description, a barcode) carries its calories, carbs, fat and fiber across as well.
- Read from Health Connect: protein that other apps saved counts toward today's total, labelled so you always see where each gram came from.
- Weight: your weight from Health Connect keeps the plan current, and you stay in charge. A new weight brings a suggested target to History, and you tap Keep or Use.
Both directions are free, entry by entry. MacroFactor's integrations bring in daily calorie and macro totals;7 Protein Buddy moves each log. The permission details are in how to sync protein with Health Connect.
The home screen widget
One widget, resizable in both directions:
- Narrow: today's grams, the Protein Buddy character and a camera button.
- Wider: the grams, the character, your streak, and a column of up to three buttons you choose in Settings, Widgets, Quick actions, from Manual, Voice, Assistant, Scout and Photo. Out of the box they are Voice, Assistant and Photo.
Tap the card to open the app, the streak to open History, or a button to start that log. To add it: touch and hold an empty spot on your Home Screen, tap Widgets, find Protein Buddy, then touch and hold the widget and drag it into place. Settings, Widgets, How to add has the same steps inside the app.
Lock Screen progress is an optional ongoing notification that keeps today's progress in view, with Manual, Voice and Photo buttons. Switch it on in Settings, Widgets.
The widget and Lock Screen progress are free; Protein Pal lists its home screen widget as part of Pro.2 MacroFactor's Quick Action widgets open its screens,8 inside an app with no free tier.6 Why one glance does so much for the habit is in tracking protein from a widget.
Dark mode
Settings, Appearance, sits between Time format and Language: Automatic follows your phone, or pick Light or Dark. The dark screens are a deep navy, and the gold stays gold. Each phone keeps its own choice, and the widget has its own Auto, Light and Dark setting in Settings, Widgets.
Five ways to log on Android
- Manual sits at the left end of the Home dock. Type "two eggs and toast" and the grams come back, free, or roll the gram ruler. Its Recent, History and Favorites tabs keep every food you have named, one tap from logging again.
- Barcode is a tab in the camera. Point it at the pack and the protein reads straight off it, free every time.
- Photo takes the plate. Under How much did you eat? you pick ½, ¾, All or ×1½, and a picture already on your phone goes in through Gallery in the
•••menu. - Voice listens while you talk through the meal, then shows the same portion buttons.
- Assistant answers "what could I eat for 20 g?" in a chat that costs nothing to use.
At a restaurant or a buffet, Protein Scout reads the menu or the counter and ranks the dishes for the protein you still need today. The guide to logging protein by photo, voice, barcode or typing matches each method to the meal it suits best.
What is free
Free, with no expiry: manual entry, typed meals, barcode scanning, your personal target, History, two-way Health Connect sync, the widget, Lock Screen progress and dark mode. Photo, voice and Protein Scout come with 3 free tries each; after that a subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase keeps them going. You never need an account to start.
