The short answer is that nothing targets one area, and it is worth explaining why before getting to what protein does do, because the honest version is still useful.

Why spot reduction does not work

Fat is stored in cells throughout the body and released into the bloodstream when energy is needed. It is not consumed locally by the muscle nearest to it.

So the fat used during a set of crunches is drawn from wherever your body is drawing fat that day, which is a pattern determined by genetics, sex, age and hormones rather than by what you just did with your abdomen. Working a muscle builds that muscle. It does not empty the fat cells sitting on top of it.

The same logic applies to food. There is no ingredient that instructs the body to release fat from a particular store.

What decides where fat comes off

Largely, you did not choose it and cannot change it.

Distribution is heavily genetic, and it shifts with age in both sexes. For women it shifts markedly through the menopause transition: the DXA data from a large cohort study found the rate of fat gain roughly doubling at the start of the transition, alongside lean mass beginning to fall.3 The abdomen is where a good deal of that new storage goes.

That is a change in pattern rather than a failure of effort, and it is worth naming because it is very commonly experienced as the latter. What actually changes in midlife covers it properly.

The finding that is closest to an exception

One randomised trial is worth knowing about, because it is the only place in this library where a protein intervention moved a waist measurement.

That is a real result and it is not spot reduction.1 The mechanism is that the two groups had different overall trajectories: one was holding its loss and continuing to improve composition, the other was regaining. The waist reflected the whole-body difference, it was not selectively targeted.

It is a small trial from 2005, so hold it lightly. It is also the most direct evidence there is, and what it means for keeping weight off is where it belongs.

What is actually available to you

Three levers, none of them area-specific, all of them effective on total fat.

  • An energy deficit, which is the only thing that reduces fat at all.
  • Enough protein, which shifts the loss toward fat and away from muscle: about 0.87 kg more fat lost and 0.43 kg more fat-free mass kept across 24 trials.2
  • Resistance training, which gives the muscle a reason to stay and changes shape in ways the scale does not report.

Do those and abdominal fat reduces as part of the total, in the proportion your body happens to use. That proportion is not negotiable, and the total is.

The instrument problem

If you are judging this with a bathroom scale you will get a poor answer, because the scale reports one number for two tissues moving in opposite directions.

A tape measure at the waist is a cheap and better instrument for this particular question, taken monthly rather than daily, at the same point on the body. It responds to the thing you are actually asking about, and it will keep moving during periods when the scale does not, which is the usual explanation for a stall that is not one.

Abdominal fat is also associated with health risks that go beyond appearance, and if that is the reason you are asking, it is a good question for your doctor rather than for a nutrition page: they can look at the measurements that actually matter alongside the rest of your history.

Can you target belly fat with diet?

No. Fat is mobilised from stores across the body in a pattern set largely by genetics and hormones, not by which food you ate or which muscle you worked. Any diet that reduces fat will reduce abdominal fat as part of the total, and no diet reduces it selectively.
