That study is where the practical numbers come from, and note the shape of it: the dose is per kilogram of body weight, not a flat figure.1 For a 70 kg older adult, 0.40 g/kg is about 28 g. That is the origin of "aim for about 30 g a meal", and it explains why the advice sounds arbitrary when stated as a flat number for everyone.

It is worth naming the limits of that evidence too. It was a small study, in men, measuring a short-term response rather than muscle gained over months.

Why "wasted" is the wrong word
